🐶 NYFW: Doggy-style

New season = new fashion. Since it was just NYFW, I feel like it’s the perfect time to normalize coordinating outfits with your dog.

For me what comes from within is a love for Sully so strong it found its way into my closet. So let’s go back to where it all began…

A few years ago, not long after we got Sully, we were on our morning walk to the park on a crisp fall morning when my husband looked over and asked, “Did you do that on purpose? Match your outfit to Sully?”

I in fact had not. At least not consciously. But when I looked down, I realized I was dressed head-to-toe in brown and white. Basically Sully’s mirror image, from her white paws to her velvety-brown body and white chest.

My subconscious dressed me in “Sullycore” without me realizing it…

My husband swore I was doing it on purpose, strangers at the park even started making occasional comments, so in Britney’s words: “Oops, I did it again”. And then again. Until finally, it was on purpose.

Beyond au naturel

Eventually, Sully started wearing more than just her natural coat. We don’t dress her up just to look cute (though she absolutely does).

Sweaters keep her warm during brutal NY winters, shirts stop her from itching when allergies flare up, and sometimes a snug fit helps her feel safe when she’s anxious – think thunderstorms, fireworks, garbage trucks, [insert other loud, scary noises].

But even though the clothes serve a purpose for her, they also do something for me. This is my diary, so I’ll admit it: nothing makes me happier than seeing her strut around in a ridiculously cute outfit.

Enter Little Beast

One sweater turned into five, five turned into her actually needing her own closet. Then they dropped matching human clothes, and suddenly we were very much twinning on purpose.

Oscar de la Renta said, “Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”

Well Oscar, being myself looks a lot like matching color palettes, pants, sweaters – anything – with Sully.

And because I fully support enabling this lifestyle, here’s a little mood board of inspo to get you started on dressing like your dog.

September’s Breed of the Month: Labs

For an incredible 31 years, the Labrador Retriever held the crown as America’s most popular dog breed. (That’s longer than Friends reruns have been on TV.) Labs are the ultimate all-rounders: goofy enough to keep you laughing, loyal enough to stick by your side, athletic enough to swim like Olympians, and so food-motivated they’ve basically turned floor clean-up into a competitive sport.

Here’s what makes Labs so endlessly lovable…

• Wagging With Intent
  Their tails are so strong they’ve been known to break glasses off coffee tables. Scientists call this “happy tail syndrome.” Their humans just call it “why we can’t have nice things.”

• Professional Mood Boosters
  They’re one of the most popular service dogs in the world, and it tracks. Labs just know how to make people feel better.

• The Original “Foodies”
  Labs don’t just love food, they’re genetically wired for it. Scientists actually found a gene variation that makes them feel hungry all the time. Translation: if there’s a sandwich unattended, it’s already gone.

• World-Class Swimmers
  Those otter-like tails and webbed paws aren’t just for show. Labs were bred to jump in freezing water and haul back fish nets. Basically, they were the original lifeguards, minus the red swimsuits.

• Ball. Is. Life.
  Labs don’t play fetch. They are fetch. If you throw a tennis ball once, congratulations, you’ve just signed a lifetime contract.

September always sneaks in with a shift. The mornings are cooler, the air’s lighter, the sun hits differently — and if you have a dog, you find yourself crouched in the leaves like Sherlock Holmes asking, “Where the hell did that poop go?”

Poop hunting aside, fall’s always been my favorite. It’s the one season that doesn’t blur into the rest. There’s a clear before and after — a reset without the New Year’s resolution pressure.

Which feels like perfect timing, because September is also Responsible Dog Ownership Month. (Dog) parenthood is its own kind of evolution: you learn, you adapt, and while most days are the absolute best, every now and then you get humbled.

And in that same spirit, this space is evolving too — meet Diaries of a Hot Dog Mom. When I launched back in June as The Hot Doggy Digest, it fit just enough to get started, but it felt a little too “official newsletter” and not enough “me, covered in dog hair while Sully zooms through the living room” — aka the real, unfiltered version of our life.

So here’s to a triple glow-up — new season, new lessons as a dog mom, and a (new)sletter that’s more us. Sully and I are so happy you’re along for the ride. <3

Back to Responsible Dog Ownership Month (RDOM, because I refuse to type that again.)

For me, being a responsible dog mom means reflecting on the good days, the great days, and the occasional “that could’ve gone better” days.

Case in point: a few weeks ago, my Boxer Sully had one of her most intense reactive moments since early 2024. We were fresh off vacation with that extra happy pep in our step to be home and reunited with our Sully girl, and we made the mistake of getting her too hyped before letting her run off-leash in the park.

Cue: wild, blissful zoomies…until she spotted a woman and her leashed dog running toward us. We called her name — come, leave it — all ignored. We tried the e-collar beep she almost never ignores. Nothing. The last resort was our “press in case of emergency” vibration that’s never failed. Still nothing.

She lunged at the leashed dog — barking, growling, and turning our perfect morning into chaos. Thankfully, no one got hurt, but the guilt, embarrassment, frustration, shame — insert every bad feeling imaginable — hit hard.

Reactivity doesn’t just unravel your dog — it unravels you, too. If you’ve been there, you know the exhaustion, isolation, and spiral of self-doubt it brings.

I carried those feelings for days, replaying what I did wrong. And as mad as I was at Sully for what happened, I was more mad at myself for failing her because that flash of reactivity couldn’t be further from her true self.

98% of the time, she’s an angel. She’s well-trained, social, a doll with kids (literally, they treat her like a rag doll and she loves it). Even our vets give her glowing compliments (unrelated: we pay an obscene amount of money to them).

It was clear we both needed a reset — her on reactivity, me on keeping her focus sharp.

Here’s what’s been helping lately — and reminding me why the work matters:

1. Enrichment toys ~ While I’m getting ready for a walk, Sully works on a puzzle. It burns a little energy and helps her start off calmer and more focused. These are our favorites.

2. Spot & Tango’s Unkibble as training treats ~ Sully l o s e s her mind over these. Turkey + sweet potato + some secret sorcery that has her ready to sell my soul for a single crumb. (Use this 50% off code and watch your dog join the cult — we don’t get a dime, just happy to enable your pup’s new obsession.)

   1. *Hack* ~ We don’t do the monthly subscription (we already pay an arm and a leg to The Farmer’s Dog — and our vets, as mentioned}. You can text their support team telling them you’re using the Unkibble as a topper/treats, and they’ll pause the subscription until you’re ready for the next bag. 3. Focus cues ~ We’ve been teaching Sully “look” to help keep her focus on us when we pass triggers. Step-by-step guide here.

4. Mini training sessions ~ During the day when I’m also due for a break, we revisit old commands, stack them, or add little twists to keep her sharp and confident.

5. We’re bringing in a pro ~ A few weeks before Sully’s episode, we spotted a trainer in the park helping a dog calmly face a trigger. I got his info, forgot about it, then remembered mid–spiral-ChatGPT-ing trainers. We start lessons next week with Beat Kaestli, founder of 3for3 Dog Training (@3for3dogtraining), who specializes in helping reactive and fearful dogs. I’ll be sharing videos and updates of our journey, so stay tuned!

6. Finally, grace — for both of us ~ One reactive moment doesn’t come close to erasing all of the progress we’ve made, and it doesn’t make me any less of a good dog mom to a very good girl.

Every small shift is its own reset, and dogs are the masters of it. They don’t wait for the ball to drop on New Year’s or for the leaves to turn — they start fresh every day. The real glow-up isn’t one big change. It’s the little resets that add up to something bigger.

This Fort Greene girlie has every treat stop mapped out in the neighborhood and never misses an al fresco dining date. When she’s off treat duty, she’s the sweetest foster sister to rescue cats and the undisputed queen of couch cuddles.

Her best trait of all? Making everyday moments feel even sweeter than her name.

There’s something about the way dogs love us – no judgment, no agenda, just pure devotion. It’s one of their (many) superpowers.

They don’t care what we look like, how old we are, or what kind of baggage we carry. They love us exactly as we are, and often better than we love ourselves. I’ve said this since I was a kid and will keep saying it ‘til I’m 102 (fingers crossed): dogs are the truest form of unconditional love.

This week’s post is all about that kind of love – the best kind that melts your heart quicker than your ice cream cone in the August heat.

If a Dog’s Ever Healed You…

If you missed the last post, I mentioned Dog Days by Ericka Waller – a book that perfectly captures how deeply dogs understand us, sometimes (most times) better than humans.

It’s about three strangers, each dealing with grief, healing, and figuring out how to show up as their real, unfiltered selves – whose lives serendipitously intertwine through their unexpected connections with dogs.

It’s a beautiful reminder that dogs have so much love to give and so much to teach us if we let them. Can’t recommend enough.

Proof That It’s Never Too Late for More Love

Johanna (now 102) & Gucci happy as clams

Let me just warn you now: this one might leave you happy crying.

This sweet angel woman, Johanna, applied to adopt a senior dog on her 100th birthday (goals). Gnocchi (yes, please) was rescued from a hoarding situation and had been waiting a long time without any interest.

Her age didn’t hold her back. The shelter said Johanna’s application was detailed, thorough, and backed by a solid support system (her daughter Debbie and a caregiver).

Johanna met Gnocchi, now named Gucci, over a virtual call and the next day, her application was approved. Her daughter said when Gucci arrived, he jumped right into Johanna’s lap like he knew he was finally home.

“They are thick as thieves… He is spoiled rotten! He's a couch potato who was a perfect match for my mom.” – Debbie

July’s Breed of the Month: Shibas

Shiba Inus are full of personality, and there’s a lot to love (and laugh about).

• Originally bred in Japan as hunting dogs, Shibas were meant to flush birds and small game out of the brush. Now they mostly hunt for crumbs under the couch and ignore your calls.

• If a Shiba doesn’t want to do something, they’ll let out a scream that sounds like someone just canceled their favorite show mid-season, without warning.

• Shibas are famously cat-like. They keep themselves impeccably clean, hate anything remotely wet, and you won’t catch them dirtying their coat for “fun”. They’ve got standards.

Summer is one of our favorite seasons…but let’s be honest, it can be ruff out there. Long walks turn into short strolls, pavement feels like lava, and I’ve said “not until it cools down” more times than I can count.

As a dog mom trying to help us thrive (not just survive), I’m sharing our Sully-approved must-haves.

Our Summer Survival Kit

WagWellies & Spark Paws Cooling Vest

Starting with Sully’s summer uniform: WagWellies for those hot cool girl walks, and her Spark Paws Cooling Vest for any extended time outside.

Pavement can hit 125°F even when it’s just 77°F – way too hot for paws. (If it’s too hot for the back of your hand, it’s unsafe for their paws).

These shoes are the only ones she doesn’t hate, actually stay on, and keep her feet protected. The vest is great for chilling (literally) in the shade, sipping a pup cup, and staying cool before she gets too warm.

Bonus: the fruit print is so cute I’ve considered borrowing it.

Pup Dip Dog Pool

For post-walk cooldowns or beach hangs, we love the Pup Dip Pool. It’s non-inflatable, foldable, and super durable. We’ve had ours for 3 years and counting and couldn’t survive summer without it.

Swaggy Dog Box

But summer’s not just about staying cool – it’s about having fun.

This month we switched Sully’s monthly subscription to The Swaggy Dog Box, and they absolutely nailed it with their “Pool Pawty” theme: the cutest (high-quality!) toys I’ve ever seen, healthy treats, AND wellness products.

Breed of the Month: Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers: Like sunshine, but fluffier 🌞

A breed that practically defines “good dog energy” – Golden Retrievers. Here are a few fun things to know about these endlessly loyal, endlessly shedding sweethearts:

1. Golden Retrievers were literally bred to fetch things, and they take that job very seriously.
   Whether it’s a tennis ball, your sock, or a stick the size of a canoe, they’re bringing it back like it’s the crown jewels.

2. They’ve never met a stranger, just new best friends.
   Goldens have endless affection and zero guard dog instincts. Your house has never been less protected (or more loved).

3. Goldens are the kings of the “soft mouth”.
   They can carry an egg without cracking it… but also chew your favorite sunglasses into modern art.

4. They’re full-body smilers.

   Goldens don’t do subtle joy, they do maximum joy. When they’re happy, it’s not just the tail – it’s the face, the eyes, the ears, the whole wiggly package.

Betty believes in starting the day with lots of enthusiasm! Every morning, she positions herself as close as possible to her person’s head and delivers a heartfelt “good morning” howl – gotta make sure no one sleeps through the sunrise (or, more importantly, breakfast).

Betty’s a firm believer in stranger danger. She happily barks (aka says hi!) to everyone she knows, but stays quiet around unfamiliar faces – she takes the “don’t talk to strangers” rule very seriously. Rules are rules!

Hot Tips: 🎆 The Fireworks Are Coming…

Here’s how to help your pup stay safe, calm, and convinced the world isn’t ending this 4th of July:

1. Get Exercise Early

   Take your dog for a long walk or backyard zoomies session before the fireworks start. A tired pup is a chill pup.

2. Create a Safe Space

   Set up a cozy space with their bed, favorite toys, and blankets. Close the windows, draw the curtains, and put on some relaxing music – maybe some smooth jazz if your dog is fancy!

3. Use Calming Tools

   Try anxiety wraps, calming sprays, or vet-approved supplements to take the edge off – keep calm and carry on, as they say.

4. Check Their ID & Microchip

   Even the chillest dogs can bolt if they get spooked. Make sure their collar tags are readable and their microchip info is up to date – just in case your pup tries to make a run for it.

5. Don’t Leave Anxious Dogs Alone

   If your dog gets nervous easily, don’t leave them solo during fireworks. The noise can cause serious stress, so stay home if you can, or ask a trusted friend or sitter to be their emotional support human.

Our Breed of the Month for June: Boxers

The first breed we must start with is one that I adore and my muse for starting The Hot Doggy Club – Boxers! Here are some fun things to know about them:

1. They have a signature “kidney bean” dance.
   When Boxers get excited, they don’t just wag, they wiggle their whole body into a half-moon shape like a furry little crescent roll.

2. They’re professional snugglers.
   They might look like they’re ready to guard a castle, but really, they just want to be the little spoon. Expect full-body snuggles and zero concept of personal space.

3. Boxers box!
   No, seriously – they use their front paws to “punch” when they play. Think less heavyweight champ, more flailing toddler with zero coordination and maximum enthusiasm.

4. They’re comedians at heart.

   Boxers have an uncanny sense of humor and seem to thrive on making their humans laugh. Whether it's their playfulness, goofy expressions, or dramatic behavior, they know when they're being funny – and they love the attention!
